The Wheel
Make it Personal!
Make it Personal!
Each student will work on the potter's wheel to create a personalized vessel!
Students will be scheduled on the wheel for 3 days and can get additional days scheduled if needed. Each full day on the wheel is worth 10 points. Each trimmed, cleaned and personalized vessel is worth 10 points. Addition to the form (for example, a handle) is worth 10 points. (NOTE: Pieces must make it through the firing without exploding to receive any credit. Therefore, please make note that the process of wedging and trimming is extremely important.)

3. When it's finally time!, each day (after the warm-up), get set up with a full container of water, apron and 2 or more WEDGED 1 to 2 pound balls of clay (tennis ball to softball sized). Check out your assigned tool set at the beginning of class and make sure all tools are clean and accounted for. (Tell the teacher if not.) Then choose a wheel of your choice and get set up (get a blue round "bat" if there are wheel tools, plug in the wheel, put on the pan, etc.
4. Finally it's time to throw!
- DAY 1: On your own- focus on fun, getting acquainted with the wheel and becoming familiar with the general steps. Not too much help on this day. Leave at least 20 minutes for cleanup!
- DAY 2: Step by Step instruction from the teacher or student aide/higher level student. Everyone in the group should get set up, stuck and then work toward centering. Nobody should open their clay until someone has come to take everyone through the process step by step.
- DAY 3: A little help if needed. On this day, you are pretty much on your own, but if you just can't center, ask and someone will either throw you on center or help you to find your center yourself. Try and get a basic mug shape by the end of this day.
- DAY 4: as needed.
6. Show your fired and finished piece to Ms. McLees for a grade!
