Low Fire Underglazes and Carving-Hennah Inspired Sgraffito Tile (Or just doodle)
In this station, you will explore sgraffito, the technique of carving through one surface to reveal another.
- Use white or red clay to make a test tile for testing the sgraffito technique. (somewhere between 4"x4" and 6"x6").
- Dry your tile to the leather hard stage.
- Apply 1-3 coats of colored slip or underglaze to your tile.
- Use the carving tools on the table to doodle away and create an engaging line design.
- Use a variety of line type- thick, thin, long, short, etc.
- Carve more away than you leave.
- If its too dry, give it a spritz of water with one of the water bottles hanging out on the side of one of the sinks.
- Need inspiration: Pull from the henna or tattoo designs on the table!
- When you are finished, carve your initials or name in the back and put your tile on the Greenware shelf.
